You Always Cry Twice When You Go to the South, the first photobook by documentary photographer Nik Erik Neubauer, with its eloquent title, suggests the frank and honest adventure the author had in the South of Italy. Experimenting with shadows, portraits of people who are sometimes out of focus, overlit figures and blurred impressions of places form an unconventional photographic narrative. Neubauer leaves a piece of his own perception in each photograph and does not direct us anywhere. He himself says that it is not difficult to photograph the people there and that most of the time they are even honoured to be photographed. He photographs the locals as if he were one of them, because they are honestly revealing their feelings and spaces to him. His photographs of the Italian South are captivating not only because of what they show, but above all because of what remains hidden in them. […]
